WHY I JOINED PROSPECT

Caron Williams, Prospect National Trust branch president

"Throughout my working life, where my employer has recognised unions I have always been a union member. I have always considered a union to be an integral part of an organisation and have been happy to support its activities wholeheartedly.

"I became a Prospect representative nearly four years ago, primarily to keep communication flowing between members and the union.

"At my core I believe in fair play, and I think unions have an important role to play in any organisation, for both the staff and the organisation itself. So I wanted to help Prospect succeed on behalf of its members.

"Since then I have become more involved in the National Trust branch of Prospect and have helped to mediate and resolve many issues, both for managers and staff, usually with a successful outcome. Last year I was involved in the pay review discussions for 2007 which proved popular with members and a satisfying achievement for us on the JCNC (the NT/Prospect negotiating forum).

"I have been on training courses supported by the union and believe I have gained many personal and developmental skills from becoming a union representative."
